There was a “GR meet” in Beijing, China on July 15 and I had an opportunity to have a talk and a workshop at Rayi- a very fashionable camera store located in the beautiful soho area. I’d like to thank everyone who have been involved in realizing the event.
It was actually my first time to be in Beijing. Before I went, I had known little about today’s China. When I was a teenager, I learned a little bit of Chinese. At that time, China wasn’t an economical giant and, as far as saw on TV, there were much less cars and modern architecture than today.
On the day I arrived in Beijing with Mr. Noguchi from Ricoh, Mr. Saiki from Ricoh China and his assistant Wang Guan took us to a Hutong area (a group of small shops and residences gathered along an old narrow street) near the hotel. It was some experience because I wasn’t interested in typical tourist spots at all.

On the next day, we had the GR meet. Some twenty enthusiastic GR fans participated. I enjoyed the questions and answers, walking, and taking photos with them. In the end, I had the opportunity to review everyone’s work. I was excited to see their talents and the diversity of images made out of the same camera.
It’s not appropriate to generalize the tendencies out of a small number of examples but the photos taken by the participants in Beijing were more graphical than those in Japan, where more emphasis is on emotions.
I miss Beijing already. The people, the food and the atmosphere, I loved so much.

GR meet
